Non-toxic living: 3 ways to make your home less toxic

Non-toxic living has become a trend lately. One of the founders is healthy home guru Sophia Ruan Gushée, who also wrote a book about it. According to her, we spend a lot of time indoors where there is toxic exposure from things like furniture, synthetic scented candles and chemical cleaning products. Now you don’t have to throw all those things away at once, but there are a few things you can pay attention to. In this article we’ll give you three tips to detoxify your home.

Take your shoes off

We’ll start with the easiest tip: immediately when you get home, take your shoes off. You can bring in pesticides, heavy metals and fecal matter with your shoes. Things you really don’t want in your home, especially if you stick to the two-second rule when it comes to food. 😉 Make it a habit to take them off at the front door.

More plants

Plants are very good at purifying the air. In 1989, NASA research showed that indoor plants,  including anthuriums, can purify the air of unhealthy substances such asbenzene, formaldehyde and trichlorethylene. Benzene is usually found in glue, paint, plastic and detergents, formaldehyde is a gas that is used in the production of leather and carpet, and trichlorethylene are solvents used in various synthetic materials. According to NASA, the anthurium is very effective in purifying the air from formaldehyde, ammonia, toluene and xylene. The exotic plant is also very easy to care for, it needs very little to stay beautiful for a long time. So it’s the ideal house plant.

Natural cleaning products

Another non-toxic living tip is to avoid chemical cleaning products. They remove stains well, but also contain all kinds of toxic substances. Instead, you can opt for natural cleaning products, such as baking soda. This binds acids, and that chemical reaction ensures that acids are neutralized. Acids that are in dirt and spread bad odors are therefore not masked, but really removed. For example, place a container with baking soda in the refrigerator to neutralize odors. Or sprinkle some baking soda on a wet sponge, clean the oven and rinse it with water. The options are endless, just Google it.
