Hardy Garden Orchids are a must for each garden lover!

With spring coming, the season for garden orchids is also approaching! With these hardy garden orchids you can fill your garden with exotic beauties. Meanwhile, garden orchids are available in garden centers and shops and we would like to tell you more about the possibilities to enjoy these gems in the garden…

Whichever variety you plant, the shoots will emerge with the first rays of sun in spring. They grow slowly and once they have bloomed you can enjoy them for weeks. The perennial keeps forming new shoots underground, so more flowers appear every year. Even in the darkest spot in the garden.

We’d like to explain the possibilities offered by garden orchids so you can enjoy these flowers in your garden next year.

Pleione
In April and May, Pleione is the first to show up. In the garden, these orchids have a truly special appearance, figuratively casting a shadow over other garden plants when in flower. The flowers appear before the leaves, ready to burst into colour. This eye-catching orchid grows best in a moist spot in the garden.

Cypripedium
Cypripediums, also known as lady’s slippers, flower from mid-May until June. This queen of the hardy garden orchids features large flowers and brilliant colours. The tonal range, from white to cream, yellow, pink and purple, creates a spectacular colour palette in the garden. For optimal flowering and growth, these plants are best located in a semi-shaded area of the garden.

Calanthe
Calanthe is a contraction of the Greek words ‘Kalos’, which stands for beautiful, and ‘Anthos’, which means flower. And that is exactly what it is, a plant with beautiful flowers. There is no other type of orchid with such a variety of colours and hues. Numerous fragrant clusters of flowers grow in May and June above the fresh green leaves. The leaves retain their beautiful green colour even in winter. Due to its long flowering period and the scent of the flowers, this plant is also ideal for growing in pots in semi-shaded areas.

Bletilla
This garden orchid can rightly be described as spectacular because of the beautiful flowers on its long stems. Over the years, the flower size and the number of flowers per stem have increased, resulting in an abundance of flowers per plant. The long flowering period from May to July provides a magnificent backdrop of colour in the garden. This plant, which can be planted in the ground or in a pot, also thrives in the sun.
