In September, you can support the Dutch Heart Foundation by buying an Anthurium. The Dutch Anthurium growers have banded together to support this charitable cause.
With the sale of this indoor plant, growers are collecting money for the Heart Foundation. The plant with the striking heart-shaped bract is considered very appropriately as the ‘plant with a heart’. They are available in different colours and sizes at garden centres, florists and supermarkets, amongst other outlets.
Heart in action
Anyone who sees an Anthurium immediately recognizes the striking heart-shaped bract of this robust indoor plant. It is not surprising that the Dutch Anthurium growers feel closely connected to the Heart Foundation. They have not just committed to collect donations but will also try to raise as much money as possible for the Heart Foundation with the sale of Anthuriums in September. The Anthuriums are provided with a special heart label. Last year, this action raised €12,500.
Women’s heart
Cardiovascular diseases are the most frequent cause of death among women worldwide. In September, and more specifically on 26 September (Dress Red Day), women’s hearts will be the focus of attention. By means of red clothes, accessories, plants or other accents, particular attention is devoted to the work of the Heart Foundation for female heart patients. The proceeds of Anthurium sales will be used for further research to cure and prevent cardiovascular diseases among women.

In addition to a plant with a heart, the Anthurium is also stylish and low maintenance. Without too much effort, the Anthurium will flower for months. Water it once a week and apply a few nutrients every two weeks. The heart-shaped bracts are available in different colours: from bright red to snow-white and from deep purple to soft green. Surprise yourself by a mini-Anthurium (20 cm high) or the extra-large variety (120 cm high).
