Holambra the ornamental plant heart of Brazil
Holambra is a Brazilian city in the state São Paulo and has been founded in 1948 as an agricultural co-operation by a group of Dutch farmers who emigrated to Brazil. This group settled themselves in the area of the Fazenda (farm) Ribeirão, situated at 35 km of the city of Campinas, where they started with the same agricultural activities as they had done in the Netherlands.
The name Holambra originated from the words: Holanda-América-Brasil, and is based on the philosophy of unity between the Dutch and the Brazilians, directed at the economic, cultural and social integration of the various communities.
The city Holambra has a very good development index and the best safety index of Brazil. With qualified handiwork in the agricultural sector, the city is the biggest production centre of flowers and plants of Latin America.
Like in Aalsmeer the flowers and plants are sold on a daily basis by an electronic auction. The auction takes place in the co-operation Auction Holambra; the most important sales centre of flowers and plants of Brazil.
Every year in September also in Holambra the Expoflora is held, the largest show of ornamental plant products of Latin America. This event attracts more than 200,000 visitors every year. Beside the show also a flower parade is organised, where the different aspects of the Dutch culture are brought under the attention.
Hortitec
It speaks for itself that the largest ornamental plant show of Brazil is organised in Holambra. The show had been organised for the first time in 1994 and attracted 38 exhibitors and 1,500 visitors. The following year also Dutch and Spanish companies decided to participate in the Hortitec, with which the international character of the show was a fact.
The Hortitec stands for an unique combination of the good Dutch agricultural knowledge and the fast growing, in flowers interested Brazilian economy. Since 2002 Anthura takes part in this show and the success increases every year.
Anthura is in Brazil represented by Karís Trading, her agent in Brazil. This year many Anthurium and Phalaenopsis cut flower and pot plant varieties were to be seen. Not only the actual assortment was shown, but also many novelties could be admired. The visitors had been surprised by the many different varieties, presented as a kind of flower waterfall.
